Packing a Pipe Tobacco Properly

Many people get into pipe smoking because they like the aroma that the pipe tobacco provides and they like the taste. It is a great way to relax. Some people can spend days picking out just the right pipe, the right tobacco, and the right wind resistant lighter for lighting their pipe. However, when some people first start out, they become frustrated that they can't keep their pipe lit and that they can't get a good draw on their pipe. They wonder if they are doing something wrong and some of them even stop smoking. The problem is often the way that they pack the pipe, and with a little knowledge, they can remedy this problem.
It is very important that you keep your pipe clean at all times. If it is the first time you are smoking the pipe, you won't have to worry about cleaning it, but you need to keep these steps in mind for all of the subsequent uses. The first thing that you want to do is to remove all of the debris and ash from the bowl of the pipe. You can dump it into an ashtray. Next, you are going to want to use a pipe cleaner through the stem of the pipe and toward the bowl to remove and clean buildup in the pipe.
When the pipe is clean, you are ready to start packing. Choose strands of tobacco that have no clumps or stems in them and then pack the bowl until it is one quarter from the top of the bowl. Tamp the tobacco down until it only takes up half the bowl and then hold a flame over the tobacco, drawing the heat into the bowl. Tamp again and then fill the bowl until it is full. Tamp once more, and then you are ready to light it. Hold the flame to the tobacco so that it is just touching and then draw through the step. This should light the tobacco and you should not have any trouble keeping it lit.
Then, take your windproof lighter and light the bowl. Keep in mind that you don't want the flame to touch the tobacco. Puff on the stem to draw the heat to the tobacco. Next, tamp the tobacco again and then add more tobacco so that the pipe is full. Tamp it once more and then take a draw on the pipe.
Now you are ready to light the pipe with your lighter. Let the flame touch the tobacco and then draw slowly. It might take some time, but you will be able to get the hang of packing a pipe before long.
